What We Did On Our Holiday – Karen – Duke of Edinburgh

Karen

Leader of a Senior Section Unit and Duke of Edinburgh Advisor

During the Summer months 20 members of Girlguiding Birmingham completed practice and assessed expeditions for their Duke of Edinburgh Award at bronze, silver and gold levels.

At bronze level, 10 girls walked a total of 24 kms over 2 days for their assessed expedition – in the Malvern Hills.  They developed their teamwork and problem solving abilities along the way, particularly when having to deal with over friendly horses; inquisitive cows and even a bull or two!

Girls climbing the hills

At the beginning of September, five Girls participated in a silver expedition over the Long Mynd in Shropshire, travelling 45 kms over 3 days.  The faced all types of weather including one day of continuous rain, hail and thunder.  Their stamina was certainly tested and they coped brilliantly.

Fun in fields!

In August, 6 girls headed off to Snowdonia for their gold practice expedition undertaking an impressive 60 kms over 4 days in wild country and wild weather an incredible achievement.  The team now hope to complete their gold expedition together during 2017.  Sophie wrote about this previously.

These expeditions only took place after a lot of hard work and training which started in January with a residential weekend.  New skills were learnt  in the art of map reading and navigation; rucksack packing; the safe use of portable stoves were also included, as well as menu planning and looking at food options that were light to carry but tasty and appetising at the end of a long expedition.  Everyone completed various practice walks in the Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Shropshire countryside as well as First Aid sessions and route planning to ensure that everyone was competent and ready to set out on their expeditionsKaren 3
